Edmodo is brilliant from the point of view of creating a digital school community.
The crucial thing about Edmodo is that it is an entirely safe 'social' network. A teacher creates a class group and only the people who have that group's code may join. The group can be locked down when all pupils have joined. Any pupils from outside the class who join up before it is locked down can easily be deleted from the group.
